KEYNOTE: HOW TO INNOVATE FOR THID WORLD DIVERSITY

In her talk Bottema (NL) from Vestergaard Frendsen Group (Z) emphasized how the Third world markets hold huge opportunities for innovation, however, targeting those markets really requires a product and a team that is skilled at dealing with diversity.

Roelie Bottema is a dutch Industrial Design Engineer who has been deeply involved in the development and design of LifeStraw. The LifeStraw is an idea of the Danish/Swiss company Vesterdgaard Frandsen, who designed a small portable tube that purifies the drinking water when people drink the water through the tube.

Roelie Bottema studied the use of the LifeStraw in Ghana in the earlier stages of the development phase. She also designed a special version of the straw for small children. Roelie has been part of the innovation process from very early on and will at the conference talk about how they have been innovating for the third world with diversity at vestergaard-frandsen group.

Vestergaard Frandsen Group specializes in developing and inventing products for Third World Countries. The companys designs LifeStraw , Zero Fly and PermaNet has been celebrated worldwide. For instance: The MOMA has displayed the companys mosquito nets - because these fabrics are cleverly designed. Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen entered his fathers company in 1997, and began a process of innovating and developing outstanding products with a clear focus on humanitarian aid. After travelling Africa in his twenties Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen figured that true growth lay in Africa and the rest of the developing world.
